About Me

I was about 3 months old when I came to the Sanctuary at Solid Rock with my older “brother” Zaza. We don’t have the same mom and are not sure really about anything with our history but I do know that we love each other and consider ourselves brothers. I was not with my mom and not on a bottle which is way too young to not have moms milk or formula. I refused formula when coming to SSR but they soaked my monkey biscuits in it trying to sneak some down. I was really small and underweight and pretty lethargic when I got here. The constant care and attention and food has really perked me up and Im gaining weight and growing good now. My previous home wanted to separate me and my big “brother” and I am so glad the SSR was able to take both of us and keep us together.  I love Zaza so much and hold on to either him or my stuffed toy like their my mom most of the day.  I was way to young to be on my own. My favorite foods are monkey biscuits, collard greens, sweet potato and bananas and I love pretty much any fruit.  When you watch me eat or hugging my stuffed friend or brother, you will “awe” with how cute I am. But do remember that I am hugging my stuffed friend or my brother because I am still a baby and I miss my mom.

Lemur Facts

In the past 2 decades, the population of ring-tailed lemurs has decreased by almost 95%. It is estimated by scientists that they are less than 2,500 ring-tailed lemurs left in Madagascar, which has landed the species on the world's endangerment list. With less than 10% of the original rainforests left in Madagascar, the outlook for wild ring-tailed lemurs is grim. Ring-tailed lemurs face continual habitat loss, poaching for their meat, and they are even being captured as pets for the illegal exotic pet industry.

The lemur diet includes plants, leaves, fruits, flowers, tree bark, sap.  Most of their diet comes from plants and they love fruit. They are opportunistic omnivores meaning they will eat an occasional insect or small lizard or bird if hungry enough and the opportunity presents itself.

Most pet lemurs that are sold in the United States are bred in the United States.  An infant lemur destined to become a pet is taken away from its mother on the day of its birth – and that traumatic early separation can have serious physiological and behavioral consequences throughout the life of the animal.  The separation of a newborn lemur from its mother permanently alters the baby’s brain development, and pet lemurs often develop deep social and psychological problems.
