About Me

I am a 47 year old Amazon. I am a big handsome boy who has been through several homes.  I was recently rehomed to the Sanctuary at Solid Rock, with my bonded partner Rosé (read that story because its funny). She is my life. I need nothing but her.   I am vocal with sounds but not words. I am very shy and skiddish.  I *need* Rosé, for comfort, strength, companionship.  I like people to give me snacks but other than servitude, I don’t need humans….just Rosé.  I love to massage, groom, preen, caress her all day long.   I have a health condition and am on medication to clear that up.  I do not like to be touched or held so giving me meds isn’t easy but they are pretty tricky about that here so I am getting it.  I had a bad diet during my long life but thats all changed now that I am here, so I am getting slowly healthier.  New diet. Medical attention. Medication.  Lots of human attention.   I will step up on a stick but not a human here yet. I am very nervous about everything so every new person and situation will take time. I am not easily social or trusting so I am a work in progress.

Yellow Nape Amazon Parrot Facts

The Yellow-naped Amazon is an enchanting and intelligent bird, native to the Pacific slopes of Central America, ranging from southern Mexico to northern Costa Rica. This species is particularly renowned for its vivid green plumage and the distinctive yellow patch on the nape of its neck, which gives the bird its name. Some individuals may also display yellow markings on their face and crown, adding to their striking appearance.
These parrots are relatively large, typically measuring about 14 inches (35 cm) in length and weighing around 480 grams. Known for their social nature, Yellow-naped Amazons are highly interactive, forming strong bonds with their flock members and human caretakers. They possess a remarkable capacity for mimicking human speech and have a playful demeanor.
Currently, the Yellow-naped Amazon is classified as Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List due to significant threats from habitat loss and the illegal pet trade. Deforestation and land conversion for agriculture and urban development have severely impacted their natural habitats. Additionally, their popularity in the pet trade has led to over-collection from the wild, significantly diminishing their populations. Conservation efforts are imperative to protect these vibrant birds, focusing on habitat preservation and stringent regulation of the pet trade to prevent their possible extinction.
No Amazons should be kept as pets. These parrots have complex needs including extensive social interaction, mental stimulation, and specialized diets that are difficult to meet in a domestic setting. Furthermore, their long lifespan of up to 60 years requires a long-term commitment that many owners are unprepared for. Legal and ethical issues also arise from owning such an endangered species, and the specialized veterinary care they require can be costly. Supporting conservation efforts to preserve their natural habitats is a more sustainable approach to ensuring their survival.
